What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of organic fuels (coal, oil, wood, fuels).
It is an odorless, colorless, tasteless and poisonous gas. It is toxic because by binding tightly to the iron atoms in the hemoglobin in the blood it forms a complex much more stable than that formed by oxygen. The formation of this complex causes the hemoglobin to be stabilized in the form of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) which, due to its allosteric properties, releases oxygen to the tissues more difficultly. This leads to a state of unconsciousness and therefore death. Even in low concentrations, carbon monoxide can reduce the concentration of oxygen in the brain to the point that the victim becomes unconscious and, in severe cases, dies of asphyxiation. It mixes well with air, with which it easily forms explosive mixtures and easily penetrates through walls and ceilings. Carbon Monoxide Detector. How Does It Work?

Carbon monoxide (also known as CO) detectors are lifesaving devices that can detect the presence of carbon monoxide in a room and sound an audible alarm when levels become excessive and dangerous.

Once the alarm has been triggered, however, it is up to the occupants of the rooms to immediately implement all the necessary procedures to bring the levels back to normal, by ventilating the rooms and working on the causes that created the state of danger. Obviously, in the absence of people, the rooms will still become saturated with carbon monoxide.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Height. Where and How to Install.

The CO detector should be installed vertically on a wall, making sure there are no obstacles and that there is easy access to the detector. It is of fundamental importance that the acoustic alarm is always clearly audible, therefore always keep this aspect in mind. It is recommended to install a detector in every room where there are potential sources of CO (boiler room, garage, or where there are fireplaces and stoves that burn fuel). As a general and indicative nature, these devices should be installed in the room to be monitored, about 20/30 cm from the ceiling (since carbon monoxide is lighter than air it tends to rise), no more than a couple of meters from the possible source of pollution and away from air currents that could distort the detection. More generally:

• If you install the detector on the ceiling, place it in the center of the ceiling.
• Respect the minimum distances:
• from the side wall: at least 10 cm
• from the ceiling: at a minimum of 20/30 cm
