How to select an SMD resistor

Resistance value and standard series

Select the required resistance (Ω, kΩ, MΩ) while considering design margins and the need for standard values used in common resistor series.

Nominal resistance: the schematic target value.
Drift: evaluate stability needs versus temperature and time.

Tolerance and TCR (temperature coefficient)

For measurement circuits, feedback loops and references, tolerance and TCR are key parameters: they affect overall accuracy and repeatability as temperature changes.

Tolerance: maximum deviation from the nominal value.
TCR: how much resistance changes with temperature.

Rated power and real operating conditions

Rated power should be evaluated together with operating temperature and PCB heat dissipation. With continuous loads or pulses, size the resistor with margin and consider the real application environment and airflow.

Package size and PCB compatibility

The SMD package must match your PCB footprint, pads and assembly process. In general, larger packages can help with power dissipation and rework, while smaller packages support higher density designs.

Common in power stages, logic boards, communication modules, IoT devices and IT hardware, used for biasing, pull-up/pull-down functions and functional resistor networks.

Industrial automation and maintenance

Used in control boards, sensors, interfaces and power modules where reliability and thermal behavior matter. In maintenance and repair, selecting a proper equivalent helps restore function without introducing drift or overheating.

Process compatibility

Check consistency between the component, soldering profile and SMT assembly requirements. When choosing equivalents, compare at least resistance value, tolerance, rated power and the manufacturer’s thermal behavior specifications.

When higher accuracy is needed

If the application is sensitive (measurement, calibration, regulation loops), prefer SMD resistors with tighter tolerance and TCR, and avoid “value-only” substitutions.
