Motor start capacitors: purpose and typical uses

Motor start capacitors (and, where required, run capacitors) are mainly used with single-phase induction motors to create the phase shift needed for starting torque and stable operation. Common applications include pumps, compressors, fans, small power tools and light machinery.

Types: start vs run

  • Start capacitors: designed to provide high starting torque; in many circuits they are connected only during start-up (via relay or centrifugal switch).
  • Run capacitors: intended for continuous operation while the motor is running, with specific thermal and reliability requirements.

How to select the right capacitor

Selection should be based on the motor nameplate, wiring diagram and application conditions. For replacements, always match the ratings printed on the original component.

  • Capacitance (µF): must match the required value. Tolerance and stability affect performance.
  • Rated voltage (VAC): choose a suitable rating (e.g. 400–450 VAC or per specification). Do not replace with a lower voltage rating.
  • Duty type: start (intermittent) or run (continuous). Do not interchange unless explicitly allowed by the manufacturer.
  • Frequency: typically 50/60 Hz. Check compatibility for non-standard conditions (e.g. inverter-fed systems).
  • Terminals and mounting: faston tabs, leads, terminal type; mechanical size (diameter/length) and installation constraints.
  • Temperature and service life: select according to ambient temperature, enclosure ventilation and operating cycle.

Installation and troubleshooting notes

  • Before servicing, disconnect power and confirm zero voltage; a capacitor can remain charged.
  • Use parts with equivalent or higher ratings than required by the motor/circuit.
  • If failures repeat, check mains voltage, temperature, starting relay/switch and motor condition.

FAQ

Can I increase the µF value to improve starting?
No. An incorrect capacitance may increase current and heating, potentially damaging the motor or the capacitor. Follow the specified value.

Can I use a start capacitor as a run capacitor?
Generally no. Duty cycle is different (intermittent vs continuous). Use the type required by the circuit and motor manufacturer.

What does the VAC rating mean?
It is the maximum permissible operating voltage. A higher VAC rating may be acceptable (if size/terminals fit), but a lower rating is not.
